Madder, orchil, weld, gorse, cochineal, logwood – Discover the spectactular natural colours from vegetable and insect dyes with professional textile weaver and dyer Anna Champeney Estudio Textil at her studio in the stunning Ribeira Sacra area of Galicia, north Spain.
About the tutor:
Anna Champeney is a professional craft designer of hand-woven textiles as well as a natural dyer with over 10 years experience. She uses a wide range of local plants for dyeing, including dyers´ chamomile, weld, tree barks, gorse, ivy and species of lichen which are plentiful in this pollution-free area of Spain and are extracted to create the famous historical dye “orchil”.
About the area:
Anna´s studio is situated in the picturesquely situated mountain village of Cristosende, surrounded by chestnut groves, vineyards, rivers and mountains.
Choice of course:
Anna offers an intensive 2-day introductory course and also a specialist orchil-dyeing course. Both are available as one-to-one options with flexible dates. The tuition is charged on a daily rate. Accommodation can also be arranged locally on request.

- Natural-dyed and hand-woven textiles – Anna usually has a selection of limited edition and one-off natural-dyed and hand-woven textiles which include cusion covers and scarves, in natural linen, wool and silk. There is also the opportunity to purchase rare one-off prototype designs.
- Cochineal from Lanzarote – The cochineal sold at www.textilesnaturales.com is sourced by Anna directly from the farmer on the Spanish island of Lanzarote and is of very high quality.
- Yarns – Linen and natural wool yarns for dyeing.
